On the Raggedy Edge is an independent publication by Bryson Masse, a science and climate journalist in Toronto. It began in 2024 as a series on AI. Since August 2026 it follows one story.
A record El Niño is forecast to peak this winter — and unlike almost any other disaster, it published its itinerary months in advance. The dispatches follow it through the world's food system to the May 2027 harvest: the forecast, the funding, and the field.
Two legs are booked. Eastern Australia in October 2026, where an El Niño shows up first and in public, in export figures the whole world reads. Southern Malawi in November, at planting, and the same households again at harvest in May 2027. Either outcome files.
How the dispatches are made
Every figure traces to an open evidence layer: positions, retractions, forecast archives, all dated. Where a number fails an independent check, the project withholds it rather than publish a soft figure. The peak forecast is treated as a forecast, never a certainty. Photographs are made by the author. No generative imagery appears on this site.
